The Great Bhola Cyclone

The “Great Bhola Cyclone” was and still is the deadliest cyclone to ever be recorded a category 5 cyclone with a death count of over 500.000 people killed. Bhola struck the east Pakistan (now Banghladesh) and India’s west bengal on september 12th, 1970. The cyclone formed on the Bay of Bengal and made a landfall on east Pakistan.The storm surge devastated many of the offshore islands with winds from 185 km/h to 220 km/h. In the most severely affected Island in the proximity upazila, Tazumuddin, over 45% of the population of 167,000 was killed by the storm. There were no survivors on the 13 islands near Chittagong.More than 3.6 million people were directly affected by the cyclone, the total damage from the storm was $450 Million dollars in repairs. 85% of the homes were severely damaged, 90% of the fishermen suffered heavy losses, 65% of the fishing capacity of the coastal region was destroyed by the storm,$63 million worth of crops were lost and 280,000 cattle. Three months after the storm, 75% of the population was receiving food from relief workers, and over 150,000 relied upon aid for half of their food.
